A burst pipe, an overflowing toilet, or a backed-up sewer line — plumbing emergencies don’t wait for convenient timing. As a veteran-owned company serving Utah families 24/7 since 2002, Nearby Plumbing has seen every emergency imaginable. Here’s what you should do while waiting for help.
Shut Off the Water
The single most important step. Locate your main water shut-off valve — usually near the water meter or where the main line enters your home. Turn it clockwise to stop water flow and prevent further damage.
Turn Off Your Water Heater
If you’ve shut off the main water supply, turn off your water heater to prevent damage from overheating. For gas units, turn the valve to “pilot.” For electric units, flip the breaker.
Open Drains and Spigots
After shutting off the main valve, open outdoor spigots and any faucets to drain remaining water from the pipes. This reduces pressure and minimizes potential water damage.
Document the Damage
Take photos and videos before you start cleaning up. This documentation is invaluable for insurance claims — something our customers in South Jordan, Murray, and Salt Lake City have thanked us for reminding them about.
Don’t Attempt Major Repairs Yourself
Temporary fixes like pipe clamps or plumber’s tape can help in a pinch, but attempting major repairs without the right tools and training can make the problem worse — and more expensive.
